“……Corey Davis photographs coffee grounds in the bottom of Japanese teacups…they’re beautiful! Davis’ compositions exude minimalist elegance….”  -  Simon Brown, wweek.com,  Portland Oregon

I had a great time.  Newspace Center for Photography is great space and asset to the Portland art community.

Forest Prime

Definition:

Forest: 1:(a large area covered chiefly with trees and undergrowth)

Prime: 2:(of the best possible quality; excellent, most suitable or likely)

As opposed to Forest Primeval

Primeval: 1:(of or resembling the earliest ages in the history of the world, based on primitive instinct; raw and elementary)

Forest Prime is a new body of work confronting the conceptual outcomes of how we “manage” our physical environment.  The title of the images refers to the time of the tree’s life to it’s mortal pruning.  The works addresses the concept of “Meaning, Time, Effects, and Change” ,commenting on our imposition of our ideas and needs upon the circumference of this world.  These images were shot within the northeastern United States.  More to come…

Landscape32

This body of work is a manifestation and continuation of my pursuit in landscape photography. One morning, I noticed the dried formations of what appeared to be landscape-like images on the bottom of my Japanese tea cups. This phenomena, repeated itself and through observation and practice it eventually became this series of work.

I see these images as suggestive of landscapes; concealed on the base of Japanese tea cups; revealed to the viewer peering in. The deposit on the bottom of the cups show water’s absence leaving dried marks of its former presence. I feel the photographs allude to the illusionary nature of all imagery and the impermanence of all things.

In January 2010, I will be having an exhibition of this body of work at Newspace Center for Photography – Portland, Oregon

In August of 2006 I traveled the city of Banda Aceh, in Banda Provence on the Island of Sumatra, Indonesia.  The city of Banda Aceh is in a valley open to the ocean.  On Dec 26, 2004, off the south coast an underwater earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale caused a subsequent tsunami that would not only threaten the people on the southern Sumatran coast but many southeast Asian countries.  Banda Aceh was hit the worst due to its location and since the powerful waves filled most of the valley.  Many people and debris were just swept back out to sea.  Two 40 to 50 foot tall waves smashed the coast line causing massive loss of life and damage.  Rough census puts loss of life around 138,000 people killed in Banda Aceh alone, and over 230,000 in all.  Using a large format 4×5 camera I photographed places that where evidence of this tramatic event and the UN rebuilding efforts.  Please view more images at my website: coreydavisphotography.com
